After an early pickup from Sámara Beach or Carrillo Town, you’ll wind up steep, scenic mountain roads that climb to 4,662 ft (1,440 m) above sea level—where perpetual cloud cover nourishes one of the world’s most biodiverse forests.
At Monteverde Adventure Park, suit up for a full canopy zip-line circuit, gliding along high-capacity cables strung between towering oaks and strangler figs. Feel the wind whip past as you “fly” through emerald foliage, then swap your harness for hiking boots and traverse a series of suspension bridges that span deep ravines and reveal the forest’s multiple layers—from shadowy understory to sunlit emergent crowns.
Next, wander into the butterfly garden, where over 30 species flit among orchids and heliconia, before enjoying the hummingbird sanctuary, home to more than 14 dazzling species dancing at nectar feeders. Throughout the day, your bilingual guide will point out epiphytic orchids, elusive agoutis, and the calls of howler monkeys echoing through the mist.
Delight in a hearty, traditional Costa Rican lunch at the park’s restaurant—gallo pinto, fresh local produce, and tropical fruit juices—before descending the mountain road back to the lowlands. Transition to the suspension bridge network, traversing several sky-high walkways that offer changing perspectives of the cloud forest’s layers and unique ecosystems.
Explore a climate-controlled butterfly aviary showcasing 30+ species, then visit the hummingbird garden to observe 14+ species feeding at ornate nectar stations.
