Most packing guides for Costa Rica are too long, too generic, or written by someone who visited once. This one is written by the people who live here and send tourists out on tours every day. We’re based in Sámara, Guanacaste, and we know exactly what you’ll actually use — and what will just take up space in your bag.
The non-negotiables
Reef-safe sunscreen is the single most important item. Guanacaste is sunny year-round and the UV index is consistently high. Bring more than you think you’ll need — it’s expensive here. A wide-brim hat and polarized sunglasses are equally important, especially on any water-based activity.
Insect repellent matters most in the evenings. If you’re planning a Turtle Nesting Tour or anything near the mangroves, don’t skip this.
Footwear: the most underestimated category
Bring water-friendly sandals (Tevas or Chacos-style) and one pair of closed-toe shoes. The closed-toe shoes are needed for ATV tours — our ATV Tour 2-Hours and ATV Tour 3-Hours both require them. The water sandals cover almost everything else: beach, boats, kayaks, and light hiking.
For the Ostional Turtle Tour specifically, water-friendly shoes are recommended because you’ll cross a small river on the way to the beach.
Clothing for activities
Light, quick-dry clothing is ideal. For horseback riding, long pants are strongly recommended — they protect your legs from the saddle. For turtle nesting tours, dark-colored clothing is required so you don’t startle the turtles at night.
A light rain jacket is useful for the green season (May–November). It doesn’t rain all day — typically a couple of hours in the afternoon — but having a packable layer prevents getting caught off-guard.
For the gyrocopter
If you’re doing our Gyrocopter Tour, note that cellphones are not allowed on board for safety. Bring $20 USD in cash if you want the photo/video package from the pilot.
Electronics and gear
A dry bag or waterproof phone case is worth having for any ocean activity. Most beach bags won’t survive a wave or a moment of inattention on a boat. Costa Rica uses the same outlets as the US (Type A/B, 120V), so North American electronics work without adapters.
What to leave at home
You don’t need a full first-aid kit — pharmacies in Sámara are well-stocked. Skip heavy hiking boots unless you’re going to Monteverde or Arenal. And leave the formal clothing behind — Guanacaste is genuinely casual; the fanciest restaurants in Sámara are still flip-flop friendly.
