1Start – Hotel Pickup & Countryside Drive

We’ll collect you from your hotel in Sámara or Carrillo Town and embark on a 45-minute drive through scenic Guanacaste countryside to the Ara Project sanctuary.

2Welcome & Conservation Briefing

Meet the sanctuary team for an overview of the Scarlet Macaw’s history in the region, the Ara Project’s mission, and today’s activities.

3Aviary & Free-Flight Observation

Tour indoor breeding aviaries to see juvenile and adult macaws up close, then move outdoors to witness free-flying birds navigating open enclosures.

4Guided Jungle Walk

Follow shaded forest trails, learning about native tree species, reforestation efforts, and how restored habitat supports macaw nesting and feeding.

5Interactive Macaw Feeding & Q&A

Participate in a supervised feeding session and engage with conservationists during an interactive Q&A on research, outreach, and the macaw’s ecological role.

What currency is accepted for this tour?

We accept payment in Costa Rican colones (CRC) or US dollars (USD). You’re welcome to pay in either currency – just let us know your preference in advance, if possible.

What if Mother Nature has other plans?

We love sharing nature with our guests, and we do our best to provide the best possible experience. However, it’s important to remember that wildlife sightings and water visibility can never be guaranteed, as they depend on natural conditions beyond our control. Thank you for your understanding!

Weather troubles - what are my options?

If our staff determines that weather conditions are unsafe or unsuitable for the tour, you will have the option to reschedule or receive a full refund. Safety comes first.

Cancellation policy?

Cancellation and prepayment policies may vary depending on the tour operator. Our policy is as follows: Cancellations made 48 hours or more before the activity are eligible for a full refund. If you cancel between 36 and 48 hours prior, a 50% refund will be issued. Cancellations made less than 36 hours before the activity are non-refundable and will be charged in full.
