Gyrocopter Tour Costa Rica — Flying Over Samara from 1,000 Feet

Most people who come to Sámara have never heard of a gyrocopter. By the time they leave, it’s the thing they talk about most. A gyrocopter tour over the Costa Rican coastline is one of those experiences that sounds unusual on paper and turns out to be genuinely unforgettable in practice.

Here’s what it is, what to expect, and why it belongs on your itinerary.

What is a Gyrocopter?

A gyrocopter — also called an autogyro — is a small open-air aircraft with a freely spinning rotor on top and a pusher propeller in the back. It looks somewhere between a helicopter and an ultralight plane, flies at low altitude, and gives you an unobstructed 360-degree view of everything below.

Unlike a helicopter, the rotor on a gyrocopter isn’t powered — it spins from airflow, which makes the aircraft inherently stable and extremely safe. If the engine cuts out, the rotor keeps spinning and the gyrocopter descends slowly and controlled. It’s one of the safest types of aircraft you can fly in.

You sit in the front seat. The pilot sits directly behind you. There’s no door, no window, no barrier between you and the view — just open air and the coastline below.

The Gyrocopter Tour in Sámara

The Gyrocopter Tour in Sámara takes off from a small airstrip near town and flies along the coastline at around 1,000 feet. From that altitude you see the full arc of Sámara’s protected bay, the jungle-covered hills behind town, Isla Chora sitting offshore, and on clear days the coastline stretching north and south as far as you can see.

The flight runs about 15 to 20 minutes — short enough that it doesn’t feel like work, long enough to cover serious ground and get a perspective on Sámara that most visitors never see.

What You’ll See

  • The full curve of Sámara Bay from above — the view that makes people understand why this place is special
  • Isla Chora and the snorkeling reefs just offshore
  • The river mouth and mangrove estuary south of town
  • The jungle and hills behind Sámara with cattle farms and small roads cutting through
  • Playa Carrillo to the south — one of the most beautiful beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula
  • Open Pacific horizon — on a clear day it goes forever

Is it Safe?

Yes. Gyrocopters have an excellent safety record — the autorotating rotor makes them more stable than fixed-wing aircraft in most conditions. The pilot is experienced and knows the local airspace well. Flights are weather-dependent and don’t go up in strong winds or rain — if conditions aren’t right, the tour doesn’t run.

There’s a weight limit per manufacturer specifications — confirm when booking if this is a concern.

Who is This For?

Anyone who wants a story to tell. Practically speaking:

  • First-time flyers in small aircraft — the gyrocopter is more approachable than a small plane or helicopter. Lower altitude, lower speed, open air. Less intimidating, more immediate.
  • Photographers — the open cockpit means no glass between your camera and the view. Drone-quality shots without a drone.
  • Couples — one of the more memorable things you can do together in Costa Rica.
  • Anyone who’s already done the catamaran, the ATV, the surf lesson — the gyrocopter is the thing that’s genuinely different.

How to Book

The Gyrocopter Tour is available through Book with Maria. Spots are limited — there’s one aircraft and one pilot — so booking in advance is important, especially during high season between December and April.

Morning flights are recommended for the best visibility and calmer air. The light on the bay in the early morning is also significantly better for photos.

Combine It with Other Tours

The gyrocopter pairs well with water-based activities the same day — it’s short enough that you can do a morning flight and an afternoon on the ocean. Some combinations that work well:
